September is National Preparedness Month—a time for all of us to stop and ask a simple question: “Are we prepared if disaster strikes?”
The 2026 theme, “Americans Stand Ready,” reminds us that preparedness begins with each of us. Hurricanes, flooding, severe storms, power outages and other emergencies can happen with little warning. Being prepared before an emergency occurs can make a tremendous difference for our families and our communities.
As Lions, preparedness also gives us an opportunity to serve before the disaster happens.
During September, I encourage every Lions Club across North Carolina to take a few minutes to review its own preparedness. Consider these simple steps:
- Make a plan: Know how your club will communicate if an emergency occurs.
- Build a kit: Keep basic emergency supplies available, including water, food, flashlights, batteries and first-aid supplies.
- Know your community: Identify members, neighbors and community residents who may need additional assistance during an emergency, including seniors and individuals with disabilities.
- Stay informed: Make sure members know how to receive local emergency alerts and weather information.
- Work together: Establish relationships with local emergency management, fire departments, law enforcement, Red Cross organizations and other community partners.
Preparedness is not about knowing exactly what disaster will happen. It is about being ready for whatever comes our way.
As Lions, we have always answered the call when our communities need us. Let September be the month when we take another step forward, not only preparing ourselves and our families but preparing our Lions Clubs to be ready to SERVE when disaster strikes.
